First Entry It's 4 o'clock in the morning and it's my day off. So why aren't I still in bed? No, it's not insomnia. It's because when I'm not "at work"... I'm still working. It's because a few years ago I was unemployed for over 8 months and I promised myself I would never do that to my family again. It's because I was self-employed for 19 years and, even though I have enjoyed the... "stability" of having the "magic of direct deposit", it has not been without a price. For those of you who immediately know what that price is, I sure hope you continue reading this, because you are the one out of the twenty standing in the room that I really want to have a conversation with. Everyone else in the room is so... uninspiring. For those others still reading, since you're demonstrating a sense of curiosity and a desire to learn (so there's still hope), I'll tell you the heavy price that has been paid: t-i-m-e. For the first 8 1/2 years of my son's life and the first 4 years of my daughter's life, I worked out of the home. I spent virtually every day with them for those years. How can that not be considered a beautiful, wonderful gift? Because of that experience, I have spent more time with my son and daughter than most father's will spend in their lifetime. But for the past 9 years I have returned to the life of a "wage slave". And guess what? I want that time back. While I have provided for my family, with the precious time given in exchange, I can honestly say, from a selfish point of view, I did not get my money's worth. I know, short of replaying those years through the use of a time machine or some cosmic event, I can't get that time back. But I can do the next best thing. And that is to do everything I can, explore every avenue, turn over every stone, to stop this cycle of exchanging (giving up) my time at a heavily discounted rate! I've seen and experienced both worlds for long enough periods of my life to know for a fact: self-employment is way better! So that's why I'm up on my "day off" and about to watch the sun rise and make my second pot of coffee. I'll be back with another entry later this morning after I get that second pot going. Thank you for reading and welcome to Day Penny! Scott Ryan
Wednesday, February 27th, 2008, 0855 PST You Don't Need to Look Far to Find Excuses, Eh? During the past couple of weeks, I've had big plans for introducing DayPenny.com. The problem with those plans, as wonderful as I might think they are, is that they can be used to make excuses for not taking action. And after all these years of "dinking around" on the Internet, I'm finally saying, to hell with it. Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead. So you don't see any wonderful graphics here (yet). And I didn't start the site here, like I originally had planned, using the latest and "hottest" CMS (a WordPress blog). I'll get to it. And it will be cool. But right now it's just in the way. What I am out to demonstrate to YOU is that you need to possess only two things: an idea and the will to take action. YOU MUST TAKE ACTION. I will admit to you I do have technical skills. But the only skills I'm showing you here so far is the ability to upload a simple web page full of text created in HTML, and I'm not even using a style sheet! And whatever technical magic I do perform on this site, I will always be willing to take the time to explain to anyone that asks exactly how the heck I did something. OK, time for another pot. Hey, they're small, OK?
Wednesday, February 27th, 2008, 1150 PST The Offer This morning as I looked at the clock and it said 3:33, it all came together for me and I knew what to do. First, a very brief "rewind" to a couple of days ago. I was getting ready to launch daypenny.com, and while I had the basic theme and functionality of the site worked out in my head, I was still wondering what the first product/service would be. I wanted daypenny.com to be the culmination of all that I've learned about marketing, all of the mistakes I've made and learned from. One of the things I knew I had to do was "remove all objections" from the prospect's mind. Not an easy task. But doable! I also knew that what you read here and decide upon is your decision. I'm not out to twist your arm or to tell you anything but the whole truth. Before I get to the specifics of what "came together" for me this morning, please let me briefly mention the mechanism of daypenny.com. In the spirit of "removing all objections" I wanted to make an offer at a cost of one penny a day: hence daypenny.com. So my objective became one of providing value that exceeds one cent per day. When I phrase it like that, it does seem funny, doesn't it? I mean, how hard could that be? Even if I could give people my "two cents" every day (and who couldn't do that, right?), at a cost of only one cent, they'd be way ahead, right? :-) It should be easy, right? Yes, it should. And I'm out to prove it here, today, now. As I stared at the clock saying 3:33, I thought of Patric Chan's new "Niche Marketing 2.0 System". Here's the link: http://www.nichemarketing2.com/. That is not an affiliate link. For the past few years I've been thinking... wouldn't it be cool if someone took one of these "high powered" courses/systems, recorded their progress (and setbacks) in an (almost) daily diary, and then shared the experience with others who could not afford the high "entrance fee"? Don't get me wrong. I'm not talking about stealing or sharing any proprietary information. I'm talking about sharing experiences and validating ideas that can be directly applied to one's own success. In other words, why doesn't someone just take a $$$ course, turn around and charge a fraction of the original price, and say to those left out, "Here! Here is how I did it and how you can do it, too!" That is what I want to offer you. DayPenny.com will provide tremendous value to it's subscribers in many ways, covering many subjects and opportunities, over the years to come. But first up is the private reporting to you over the next few months of my progress with Patric's "Niche Marketing 2.0 System". I know it's not being in the "driver's seat" and taking the course. But it's the next best thing and you are saving $993.35! That's right, the cost of an annual membership to Day Penny is a whopping three dollars and sixty five cents, a penny a day. One other thing... please know that I am not about to piss Patric off! Whatever I reveal to you, I will make sure he is OK with. I have nothing but respect for Patric and all he has achieved. The last thing I want to do is get on his "bad side". I'll always be straight with him, like I will always be straight with you. Now you might think this is where I put a link to PayPal or something to get you to "Buy It Now". But it's not. I'm not taking your money until I know there's enough interest. Because I sure as heck don't have $997 to pluck down on the table for Mr. Chan. So here's the deal. I recently got a hold of a cool script from Ben Shaffer and his program IM PLR Club (that is an affiliate link :-) ). If you would like to take me up on my offer and take a "chance" by "risking" $3.65, then do the following: click here. That's it! No email capture or anything else. Just a click that will keep the count as shown below. This script is mainly intended to show how much of something is left, like a limited membership. But I'm putting a twist on it and using it as a simple and painless gauge of interest in my offer. When the count reaches zero then that gives me a "green light". That tells me that "it's a go". That there is enough interest to generate the funds for the $997 fee. All I'll have to do is then put up the link to PayPal and all you'll have to do is make your payment. Then the fun begins! Below is the current count. I haven't taken the time to tweak the code to increment instead of decrement. And the starting count may be higher than $997 / 3.65 = X (274 memberships - rounded up). But I want to cover myself for those who change their minds or just forget about it. I want there to be enough signups so I can afford it and not disappoint anyone! And one more thing. Clicking more than once will not decrement the count more than once. Ben saw to that. Pretty cool, eh? I wish us luck. Be sure to come back to www.daypenny.com and check out the count! Countdown to Zero and Hope:The Current Count is !
Wednesday, February 27th, 2008, 1225 PST First Step at Spreading the Word to the Masses Just a few minutes ago I added the following ad to TrafficSwarm. I'm going to break for lunch and dwell on my next step.
Wednesday, February 27th, 2008, 1455 PST Extending the Exclusive and Opt-in Available The TrafficSwarm ad was approved just a few minutes before 2pm today. So I am extending the exclusive to TrafficSwarm members until 4:30pm this afternoon. After that, I have a crazy idea for a "mini JV". For your convenience, here is an opt-in form (thanks, Ben, for the suggestion). Your information will be kept private and will not be shared.
Wednesday, February 27th, 2008, 1950 PST Time to Broaden the Awareness That ad in TrafficSwarm is going nowhere. No hits at all. Before the night is done I'll try a different ad. The next step I'm taking is to start a thread in Earn1KaDay. The community there is excellent. I know I'll get some valuable feedback and interest on the forum. You know how JV Partners try to entice their lists with bonuses to make a purchase through their affiliate links? Well, I'm considering approaching one of these affiliates of Patric's when the remaining spots begin to narrow down. I'll propose to them that if they are the first to contact their list and tell them about Day Penny, giving their list an alternative to something they just can't afford, then when the countdown reaches zero, the PayPal button is in place, and the funds become available, I will make the purchase through their affiliate link, giving them my bonus. :-) Where there's a will, there's a way.
Wednesday, February 27th, 2008, 2015 PST If at First You Don't Succeed... I've submitted a second ad to TrafficSwarm. It hasn't been approved yet. It's an improvement, I think. |
I look forward to tomorrow.

Positive Feedback and a Proposal Sent
The encouragement from members of Earn1KaDay has been GREAT. It just struck me how that experience makes me feel a little like Jerry Maguire entering the hotel lobby to applause after sending out his "statement" before sunrise. It feels wonderful. But according to script, I know down the road I will have the experiences, at least on a symbolic level, of getting "fired" (the unexpected challenge) and needing to stand up on the desk and shout through the keyboard, "Show me the mon-eeeeeeeee!" (doing whatever it takes).
Like I mentioned to the members of E1KaD, I still have some time. Patric has sent out his "14 left" email this morning. I do expect those to go within the next 24 hours. But I still haven't given up because I know that next will be the "shake out" period with refunds. So I figure I still have another week to pursue a spot made "open" by someone who has changed their mind.
I just "broke away" for a moment and I see that Niche Marketing 2.0 has "sold out". But Patric does bring up the 2 or 3 cancellations that can be expected. So I have signed up for his waiting list.
I went ahead and sent a proposal to one of the affiliates of Patric's, Jeremy Gislason and Simon Hodgkinson. It is a simple proposal. All they need to do is let one or more of their lists know about this site, and in return, when the funds are finally available, I will sign up with Niche Marketing 2.0 via their affiliate link: http://www.viraltrafficlistbuilder.com/recommends/NM2.
Also, I did contact Patric's Help Desk to let him know what I was up to. I received a reply from his "Personal Assistant". She thought I was after a "collaboration" with Patric. I replied, letting her know I am not after a "collaboration", but simply as a courtesy, letting Patric know what I am up to.
This morning I am going to watch Patric's 26 minute video "Niche Marketing 2.0 Explained". I plan on leaving a comment on his blog afterwards.
Whatever happens, understand I will never give up. There are always options. There must always be a "Plan B".

A Reply and Suggestion
I received a reply from one of Patric's affiliates, Jeremy Gislason, Because this correspondence was private, I will not violate that privacy by quoting any of Jeremy's comments. But I can say, in general, Jeremy's reply was thoughtful and considered, and he made it clear, while he considered it an interesting idea, he thought it was not in their best interest to communicate the idea to their lists.
He did suggest telling my list, if I had one. And I admit that I do have one. But the list is not targeted. It was built from participating in "giveaways" last year as a contributor. The size is not insignificant: over a thousand individuals. But I am extremely protective of this list, even though it is untargeted. What I mean is, I don't abuse them. I have sent a total of 3 emails to this list in the past 6 months. The reason for this is simple. I have promised myself I would send no communication to them until I really had something of value for them. And now, since I have received so much positive feedback, I am confident this qualifies.
Patric sent out an email this morning mentioning the predictable cancellations have happened. The quantity was 6. I've check the order page this evening and I see that the number of spots left is 5.
This really is the "home stretch" here. I'm not going to approach another one of Patric's affiiliates because I think the reply will be similar to Jeremy's. So right now it's up to my list. Come on, freebie seekers! I know this isn't "free". But $3.65 is as close to free as you can get without spending $997 for something worth ???.
Just click HERE to help the counter reach zero and commit to spending a whopping $3.65 to acquire the "next best thing" experience without spending $997 or more. And then either be sure to check back or sign up to receive notification when the counter does reach zero.
To all of you "1 out of 20 in the room" still reading, thank you. Stay with me and hopefully, you will be profitably entertained.
I will upload another message tomorrow. I think it's about time I migrate these messages to a WP blog.

I Apologize for the Delayed Message
I need to head for the bus in 3 minutes. I apologize for not following through with a message the following day. I've had to let my thoughts "percolate" for a few days to determine my next step. It's coming together. I'll have another post either tomorrow or Sunday. Please check back then. It will be worthwhile.

My Favorite Day of the Week
I made it! I'm where I want to be. It's Sunday, "I'm off", and I am "in the zone" with Day Penny.
I've got a lot of studying and production going on today. As milestones are reached and corners are turned, I'll report back here to inform you of progress made.
And I will find the time today to report to you what has occurred regarding "Plan B", since Patric Chan's "train has left the station".
That's OK. Because "Plan B" is going to go further and be more successful than "Plan A". And it will hold your interest even more that an exploration of "niche marketing". In a word: ebay.
So be sure to check back later today. It will be interesting. And one step closer to profitability.
